Project Whirlwind π
1949-1959 - The first computer that interacted with its users,
an amazing story now being reconstructed
Project Whirlwind was what pulled computing out of the punch cards & batch processing frame of mind. It can safely be considered to be the origin of interactive computers. Guy Fedorkow and Angelo Papenhoff both have simulators, and Guy is working a on project for MIT and the CHM to do a recovery & reconstruction project of Whirlwind documentation and software. We will make a replica as well - but it will take some time yet. You can get more information on the machine, its recovery project and the simulators through the links in this paragraph.
